NBC 4 New York (http://bit.ly/11kapIO ) reported Monday that the headstone lists his birth year as 1942 instead of 1924.

The engraver, Tommy Flynn, of Flynn Funeral and Cremation Memorial Services, says it was “an inadvertent error” and that he feels “terrible.” He says he’ll correct it.

Koch was buried in Trinity Church cemetery in Washington Heights after dying of congestive heart failure in February at 88.

The Democratic mayor is credited with helping save New York from its economic crisis in the 1970s and leading it to financial rebirth.

A Minnesota mother and her 18-year-old son are accused of stealing nearly $5,000 in frozen gopher feet and selling them for a bounty.

Thirty-seven-year-old Tina Marie Garrison and Junior Lee Dillon, both of Preston, were charged last month with receiving stolen property and theft. They allegedly gave the feet to local townships that offer rewards as they try to limit the gopher population.

Garrison has pleaded not guilty. Her son has a hearing next month.

The complaint says a gopher trapper reported to authorities that bags of feet were stolen from his freezer. According to the complaint, the owner found Dillon had turned in $1,014 in feet in November. In December, Garrison turned in $3,780 in feet.

Local students working to qualify for the Dream Act say their efforts may have been derailed.

They say the former director of an Athens nonprofit, The Athens Latino Center of Education and Services, took their money, messed up their federal applications, and ran.

Daniel Lopez, 29, of Winder, is among those students. Lopez told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh he now faces an uncertain future.

Lopez told Kavanaugh in Spanish he came to Georgia with his family when he was 15. The undocumented Mexican immigrant came to work. School took a backseat to supporting the family. He says everything he knows is in Georgia and that’s where he wants to stay.

The Dream Act allows people like Lopez to begin the path to citizenship. But “dreamers”, as they’re known, need a high school diploma, a GED, or need to be working toward a GED.

In October, Lopez signed up for classes at the Athens Latino Center of Education and Services, or ALCES. Every month, he paid cash to the former director, Jaime Umana. Umana is now on the run from Athens-Clarke County police. Investigators believe he used the nonprofit for his own gain. Police have issued seven arrest warrants for writing false statements. Those charges stem from a separate investigation tied to ALCES, but not the GED program.

Last week, Lopez received a letter from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services citing a problem with his Dream Act application.

He wasn’t the only student to get a rejection letter. ALCES said every single day, a student is walking in that door showing them a rejection letter of his or her own.

“They get top priority,” says Matt Brewster, ALCES board chairman.

Brewster is among new leadership at the nonprofit. He says as each student comes forward, a new application letter is prepared to fix Umana’s incomplete paperwork.

The board fired Umana in January after uncovering botched paperwork, poor records, and money missing from several programs, including the GED program.

“They were paying him in cash and we noticed that was not going toward the ALCES accounts,” Brewster said.

“All those fees were pretty much being pocketed by Umana,” said coordinator Natalie Bouyett.

ALCES says its program does meet the federal standards and they expect to get all its students back on track.

Lopez awaits his solution, telling Kavanaugh he doesn’t know what he’d do in Mexico when his whole life is here.

Investigators are searching for Umana. They say it’s possible he fled the state.

The three hosts of the 790 The Zone morning show, “Mayhem in the AM”, have been sacked for a skit mocking a former pro football player with a terminal illness.

ALS, the terminal neurodegenerative disease, is also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Hosts Nick Cellini, Stephen “Steak” Shapiro, and Chris Dimino staged an on-air mock interview Monday with former New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason, who is paralyzed, and cannot speak as a result of ALS. In the skit, one of the show’s hosts speaks in a computerized voice, posing as Gleason and asks to be “smothered” as a favor.

The ALS Association of Georgia told Channel 2′s Tom Regan the skit was insensitive and an insult to ALS patients and their families.

“Certainly if anyone there had a personal connection to a family member or friend, they would understand ALS is no laughing matter,” said ALS spokesperson Liz Nordmark.

An ALS board member who lost her husband to the disease said people need to understand the impact it has on the afflicted and their loved ones.

‘It was a horrible thing to think he was going to be trapped in this body and that he couldn’t do anything, but he was fully functional in his mind. He knew exactly what was happening to him,” said ALS Georgia board member Shirely Lucia.

The manager of 790 The Zone issued an apology for what he described as “offensive” remarks on the show. He also said all three members of the “Mayhem in the AM” show had been suspended and then terminated from their positions.

The three former show hosts issued apologies on Facebook, Twitter and other social media and have pledged to work for a charity established by the former player called TEAM Gleason to battle ALS and increase global awareness.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis is back home after bonding out of jail.

DeKalb District Attorney Robert James announced a grand jury indicted Ellis Tuesday on 15 counts that included charges of theft, extortion, false statements and writings, conspiracy to defraud a political subdivision and coercion of another employee to give anything of value for political purposes.

James announced during a news conference that an arrest warrant was issued for Ellis and he had up to 48 hours to turn himself in. The CEO surrendered to authorities almost immediately after.

According to the indictment, Ellis asked the county’s director of purchasing and contracting to create a list of vendors with county contracts so Ellis could solicit campaign contributions from them. It said Ellis threatened to cut business ties with vendors and report at least one employee for poor customer service after there was no response to his solicitations.

Channel 2 Action News had the only crew there when Ellis walked out of the DeKalb County Jail at about 8 p.m. Tuesday night after posting a $25,000 bond.

Channel 2′s Amy Napier Viteri tried to ask Ellis questions, but he would not stop to answer any.

Channel 2′s Ashley Swann was at Ellis’ home when he arrived there from the jail, where he gave a brief statement.

“I do want to make one statement emphatically to the good people of DeKalb County, that I’ve done nothing wrong, as I’ve said from the very beginning. (I’ve) Done nothing wrong and I would never, ever, ever do anything to violate the public trust,” Ellis said, talking to reporters in the driveway of his Stone Mountain home.

Earlier this year, agents took computers and other evidence from his home and county office. The district attorney’s office was also looking into campaign financial records.

At the time, Ellis denied any wrongdoing.

Channel 2′s Tony Thomas discussed the case with former District Attorney Jeff Brickman.

“I think any time you take on the CEO, that you’re expecting a big battle ahead of you,” Brickman said.

Ellis could be potentially removed from office as a result of the indictment. Gov. Nathan Deal’s office told Channel 2′s Erica Byfield the governor will receive the indictment and assemble a three-person panel to review the case. Based on the panel’s recommendation, the governor may remove Ellis. In that case, the county commission’s presiding officer, Lee May, would become the interim CEO.

“This is a sad day for DeKalb County. While every person is clearly innocent until proven guilty, this ongoing saga has been a distraction and continues to bring unwelcome negative publicity to our county and government,” May said.

Ellis’ indictment comes just months after Gov. Nathan Deal removed five DeKalb school board members for mismanagement.

“Businesses shy away from a county that’s in disrepair when they have that many problems, and they smell bad with all these problems,” he said. “Why go and put your headquarters in a county which resonates with bad press? It breaks your heart.”

But those close to Ellis still say Tuesday’s indictment doesn’t square with the man they know, who was elected to DeKalb’s top job promising reform.

“I don’t know of any forced campaign contribution that Ellis ever attempted, and I worked in all his campaigns,” said Oliver Brown, a DeKalb political operative. “I’d be shocked (if this is true).”

Should Ellis get suspended, he’ll be the seventh elected official in DeKalb to meet that fate since March. That’s when a federal judge allowed Deal to suspend two-thirds of the county school board over an accreditation agency’s allegations about nepotism, financial mismanagement and other concerns.

Bear, a member of the NYPD Transit Bureau’s K-9 Unit, sustained four broken teeth and cuts to his tongue when he and his handler responded to the scene of a fight at the 59th Street Subway Station in Manhattan.

Police Officer Vincent Tieniber, 36, sustained a sprained wrist. He was coming to the aid of a fellow officer on the southbound platform of the No. 4 subway at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue Tuesday at 11:15 a.m.

Police Officer Rafael Diaz called for assistance to help break up a fight involving four women, ages 19 to 31.

One woman, 19, was being choked by another 19-year-old. The two women, ages 31 and 22, pushed Officer Diaz as he attempted to stop the assault on the 19-year-old victim.

Officer Tieniber and Bear arrived on the scene moments later.

While in the process of handcuffing one of the women, Ravenia Matos-Davis, age 22 of Queens, Officer Tieniber sustained a sprain to his wrist.

The same woman kicked Bear twice in the German shepherd’s mouth, cracking two teeth and chipping two others, cutting his tongue, and leaving scuff marks on his snout.

Although injured, “Bear kept the woman’s foot in his mouth, and held on until I could handcuff her,” Officer Tieniber recounted.

Bear’s damaged teeth didn’t penetrate the woman’s footwear.

Bear was treated and released from the Animal Medical Center at 510 East 62nd Street in Manhattan.

He is due to return Wednesday when his two canine teeth are expected to be capped, and two others shaved where they are currently chipped, after which time Bear is expected to return to full duty.

Officer Tieniber was treated and released from Beth Israel Medical Center in Manhattan today. He will also be re-evaluated in coming days to determine when he can return to duty.

Bear and his handler have been in tough spots before. In 2011, at the Broadway Junction station of the A train in Brooklyn, Officer Tieniber spotted three men wanted for robbery, one armed with a pair of scissors.

Officer Tieniber lined all of the suspects against the station wall, and handcuffed them as Bear stood guard, with his big brown eyes fixed intently on the three.

The same year, Officer Tieniber came upon an assault in progress by a suspect armed with a razor at the Atlantic Pacific station of the N,Q,R line.

There, the suspect froze at Bear’s bark, allowing Officer Tieniber to make the arrest without further incident.

The duo have also been responsible for tracking wanted suspects and recovering ballistic evidence, employing the combination of Officer Tieniber’s handling skills and Bear’s olfactory prowess.

Bear, age 6, has been on the job for five years; Officer Tieniber for 11.

The dog’s attacker was charged with injuring a police animal, the top charge among four that included disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration (OGA).

Last month, the Legislature passed a bill which makes killing or injuring a police animal a Class E felony. It is currently a Class A misdemeanor.

The legislation, expected to be sent soon to the Governor for his consideration, would become effective November 1.

19-year-old Alexandria James of the Bronx was charged with strangulation and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Her 19-year-old victim sustained bruising, scratches, and reported pain to her neck but refused medical attention.

State and local police spent hours at the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez on Tuesday night as another group of officers searched an industrial park about a mile away where a body was discovered the day before.

Police at the scene and prosecutors would not comment on the actions while Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified source, reported that Hernandez was not believed to be a suspect in what was being treated as a possible homicide. Police had spoken with Hernandez, the magazine said.

Sports Illustrated reported that the link between Hernandez and the case was a rented Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island plates that police had been searching for. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass., said the SUV was registered to Enterprise and investigators wanted to analyze it for fingerprints.

The Associated Press could not independently confirm the reports.

No cause of death had been released for the body found about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

Hernandez is represented by the Athletes First agency, which said it has no comment “on the Aaron Hernandez situation.” The player’s mother said by telephone from Connecticut on Tuesday she had no knowledge of a case involving him.

The Patriots drafted Hernandez out of Florida in 2010. Since then, he has combined with Rob Gronkowski to form one of the top tight end duos in the NFL.

On Tuesday night, some police officers stood on the front steps of Hernandez’s home and others could be seen inside. Some walked around the driveway and in the garage with flashlights. Before wrapping up their work for the night, one officer took a box out of the massive house.

“I am aware of the reports, but I do not anticipate that we will be commenting publicly during an ongoing police investigation,” Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.

North Attleborough is south of Boston on the Rhode Island state line, not far from the Patriots’ stadium in Foxboro.

In 38 games, the 6-foot-1, 245-pound Hernandez has 175 receptions for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. He missed 10 games last season with an ankle injury and had shoulder surgery in April, but is expected to be ready for training camp. The Patriots have not said which shoulder was operated on.

Last summer, the Patriots gave Hernandez a five-year contract. It was worth $40 million, according to reports, and came just months after the team locked up Gronkowski, through 2019.

“Aaron’s improved a lot,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said at the time. “He’s worked hard, he’s improved a lot in all phases of the game – the passing game, the running game, protection and his overall versatility. He’s doing a good job for us.”

Hernandez played in college with Tim Tebow, who was recently signed by the Patriots.

In an Eyewitness News exclusive, we went with police on an undercover operation at a Santa Ana hotel they call a magnet for crime.

It was just after 11 a.m. when a man walked out of room 821 at the California Lodge Suites Hotel, where suspected prostitution was taking place. Santa Ana police detained him for questioning.

“[He] advised us that he was here to visit a brothel. The information that we received from him, our vice unit did an undercover sting program,” said Corporal Michael Gonzalez with the Santa Ana Police Department.

Inside the room, police said they found a 25-year-old woman having sex with a 41-year-old man. An older woman and a pregnant woman sat nearby eating lunch. Police arrested the 25-year-old and said she’s been arrested four times before for prostitution. The man, now facing solicitation for prostitution, also had an outstanding drug-related arrest warrant.

“This property here has been a problem for quite some time,” said Gonzalez.

Police allege trouble with the hotel goes back more than 20 years. In the past year and a half, they said they’ve had 365 calls for service, ranging from drug problems to domestic violence.

“It’s affecting everyone. It doesn’t stay just in there,” said Santa Ana resident Jose, who only wanted to be identified by his first name.

Jose worries about children’s safety with two schools nearby, as well as the low income families who live at the hotel.

“I think our kids are in danger, because not only there’s drugs but there’s prostitution going on in there,” said Jose.

Police say they are working with the city and looking at nuisance abatement as a way to try to deal with the problems at the hotel.

“They attempt to contact the owner and see if the owner will abide by certain rules and if they don’t, we can try to fine the owner or do something with the property where he’s forced to make changes,” said Gonzalez.

It’s a move applauded by some who would like to see the hotel shut down and the crime disappear. The hotel management has not returned our calls for a comment.

A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy alleges that corruption is widespread in the sheriff’s department from the top down.

Penelope Armstrong says her partner lied in court about being choked during a chaotic traffic stop, but then she lost her job when she told the truth.

Armstrong says she’s a fourth generation member of law enforcement and was a rare female member working on the streets for the department’s gang unit. She now believes the department is corrupt, sexist, and routinely covers up the truth.

In the incident that Armstrong says led to her firing, her partner apparently grabbed a woman and threw her against their squad car. The partner claims he was then choked by a man nearby. It’s a claim Armstrong says he didn’t bring up until hours afterwards.

“I don’t think it ever happened,” said Armstrong. “I think he’s lying.”

Armstrong refused to back up her partner’s story in court. She said there was pressure put on her by the sheriff’s department to lie. Armstrong eventually testified against her partner and says a jury sided with her, finding the man not guilty of the choking.

“I firmly believe that by telling the truth, I saved an innocent man from going to prison for several years. Whatever happens to me, whatever I lose, that to me is worth it,” said Armstrong.

Armstrong, a 10-year veteran, was terminated.

“I believe the official reason was cowardice and lying,” said Armstrong.

She and her attorney, Luis Carrillo, are filing a civil claim against the department.

“She was wrongfully terminated because she refused to go along with an officer’s false version of events,” said Carrillo.

Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore wouldn’t comment on the specifics of the case, but said, “Allegations are easy to make, evidence is harder. There’s no evidence here.”

Armstrong says she was targeted because she’s a woman.

“Unfortunately, the sheriff’s department still is run like the old boy’s network,” said Carrillo.

In the civil claim, Armstrong quotes fellow deputies saying things such as, “You are an embarrassment to females” or “Why don’t you make yourself useful, go make a sandwich…You’re worthless, you should trade your gun for an apron.”

Whitmore said sexual harassment does not exist in the department.

“When this is all said and done and the facts come out, the department will be, in every aspect from top to bottom, exonerated,” said Whitmore.

Armstrong said she understands why it’s hard for people to stand up to a large department.

“They’re big bullies and it’s hard to fight a losing battle. But I’m passionate. I believe in right and wrong and I did the right thing,” she said.

Armstrong wouldn’t say how much money she’s looking for in a potential civil lawsuit. Her attorney says he hopes her story prompts a federal civil rights investigation into what he calls repeated examples of excessive force by deputies.

A former University of Southern California professor who was recently added to the FBI’s most wanted list has been captured in Mexico.

Authorities say 64-year-old Walter Lee Williams was arrested in the southern resort city of Playa del Carmen.

Williams was wanted on charges of sexual exploitation of children and traveling abroad for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts with children.

The indictment alleges Williams traveled from Los Angeles to the Philippines in January 2011 to engage in sex acts with two 14-year-old boys he met online in 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement Monday.

Williams was a professor of gender and sexuality studies at USC until 2011. It was not immediately known when he will be extradited to Southern California.
