One person was fatally shot by police on the Grand Central Parkway in Queens early Thursday, causing huge delays for travelers headed to LaGuardia Airport.
The shooting happened in the eastbound lanes approaching the airport exit just after 5 a.m.
The eastbound Grand Central Parkway was closed for the investigation, and traffic was diverted onto local streets at Exit 5. The highway reopened just before 6:30 a.m.
The 20-year-old man was hit once in the abdomen. He was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Queens in Flushing. At least two others are in police custody.
The officer, who fired once, is assigned to the NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit apprehension team.
The suspect did not fire, and no weapon was immediately recovered.
The shooting occurred during an apparent police operation that culminated on the highway.
Authorities were suggesting that those headed to the airport take the Long Island Expressway past the airport, then get on the westbound Grand Central Parkway.
