A former pastor of a northwestern Indiana megachurch likely will serve 10 years in prison for taking a minor across state lines for sex.
The Merrillville Post-Tribune reports federal prosecutors will recommend 54-year-old Jack Schaap of Dyer serve the charge’s mandatory minimum sentence.
The agreement also requires the former pastor of Hammond’s First Baptist Church to register as a sex offender.
In exchange, prosecutors in Illinois, Wisconsin and Lake County, Ind., won’t press additional charges.
Schaap Signed the plea dead and was charged Tuesday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond.
He was taken into custody after an initial hearing Wednesday pending a Sept. 26 plea hearing.
His former congregation has 15,000 members.
