Transit cop stumbles upon mugging, shoots suspect

A would-be robber got stopped in his tracks by a transit officer who stumbled onto the crime in progress.

The officer broke up the robbery in Hamilton Heights by opening fire on the suspect.

The officer, who was on duty, was near the No. 1 subway station at Broadway and West 140th Street when he saw the mugging in progress just after 10 p.m. Tuesday.
He attempted to break up the robbery, and when the suspect resisted and a struggle ensued, the officer shot the suspect once in the leg.

The male suspect was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition.

Neither the mugging victim nor the transit officer was injured.

No gun was recovered at the scene.
