Gwinnett County police have arrested a man accused of pointing his gun at officers and triggering a SWAT standoff.
The incident unfolded Wednesday at the intersection of Buford Drive and Russell Road in Lawrenceville. The area was blocked off while authorities investigated.
A 911 caller alerted police about the suspect. The caller said he saw the man beating a woman inside a car.
“They followed the vehicle as they were calling it into to police,” Gwinnett police Cpl. Edwin Ritter told Channel 2’s Kerry Kavanaugh.
Police said the caller may have saved the woman’s life.
When officers arrived, the armed suspect threatened them and said he had explosives in his car, police said. He eventually let the woman go and Gwinnett’s SWAT team arrested the suspect.
Conrad Bandoo told Kavanaugh his daughter attends a nearby day care, so he wanted to see what sparked the commotion.
“I saw the police action was going on over here, so I drove back over here to see what was going on because I was very concerned about what was happening,” Bandoo said.
The county’s Hazardous Device Unit spent hours working to determine whether there are any explosives in the car. News Chopper 2 flew over the area as a police robot removed items from the SUV, including luggage, computers and pillows.
